You can know obstetrics and gynecology well and still lose time on this exam by studying every topic equally. The AOBOG Primary Written Exam rewards breadth and efficient decisions across 225 multiple-choice questions—not a polished oral presentation. Start by matching your study time to its published content outline and timed format. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

Build Your Plan Around the AOBOG Blueprint
------------------------------------------

AOBOG assigns approximately 42–46% of questions to obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine and 28–32% to gynecology. Gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and urogynecology make up the remaining categories. Use those ranges to allocate study blocks, but do not abandon a smaller category: overall scoring is based on the total number of correct answers, not separately weighted category scores. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

### Turn percentages into decisions

- **Obstetrics:** Practice antepartum assessment, fetal surveillance, intrapartum decisions, postpartum complications, and medical disorders in pregnancy.
- **Gynecology:** Work through abnormal uterine bleeding, contraception, cervical screening and management, pelvic pain, and perioperative complications.
- **Smaller categories:** Reserve recurring sessions for oncology, infertility and endocrinology, and urogynecology rather than leaving them for the final week.
- **Osteopathic content:** Note that OMM/OPP appears within several blueprint categories; include relevant questions in those study sessions. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

After an initial mixed question set, record your accuracy and confidence by category. Give extra time to topics that are both common on the outline and repeatedly missed; retain a weekly maintenance set for areas you already know.

Make Questions Your Main Study Tool
-----------------------------------

For the written exam, practice selecting an answer from competing options. That differs from preparation for the AOBOG Oral Exam, which asks candidates to explain their evaluation and treatment reasoning aloud. Use a question bank with case-based OB-GYN items, timed mixed sets, and category tracking; use a textbook or current professional guidance to resolve specific gaps rather than reading chapters indiscriminately. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

Review each missed or uncertain question in three steps:

1. Write the clue that should have changed your answer: gestational age, stability, test result, contraindication, or patient preference.
2. State why your chosen option was wrong and what finding would have made it right.
3. Create one short retrieval prompt—for example, “What feature changes the next step in this bleeding-in-pregnancy case?”—and revisit it later.

Track *confidently wrong* answers separately. They often reveal a mistaken rule that deserves correction before you repeat more questions on the same topic. Spaced retrieval has supporting evidence in medical education, although no particular flashcard interval is an AOBOG requirement. [\[2\]](#cite-2 "Reference [2]")

> **Pro Tip:** When two options seem plausible, identify the exact decision the stem asks for—diagnosis, next test, or immediate management—before comparing them.

Use an Eight-Week Study Schedule Template
-----------------------------------------

AOBOG generally offers the remotely proctored written exam once a year in April or May. Its 2026 window was April 15–17 and is past as of September 2026; confirm your next exam date and application deadlines with AOBOG before placing this plan on a calendar. If you have fewer than eight weeks, compress topic review, not timed practice or error review. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

WhenMain taskCheckpointWeeks 8–7Take a mixed baseline set; map misses to AOBOG categories.Choose two priority gaps.Weeks 6–4Complete focused OB and gynecology sets, plus weekly smaller-category sets.Review every miss and confident guess.Weeks 3–2Alternate mixed timed sets with targeted repair sessions.Complete at least one full-length simulation.Final weekRevisit your error log and practice section pacing.Complete the required remote-testing checks.

On a clinical workday, a realistic session might be 25 questions followed by review of the misses and guesses. On a lighter day, use a 75-question timed set and review it afterward. If you use a study group, bring two disputed questions each and require everyone to justify an answer from the stem—not from memory of a question-bank explanation.

Rehearse the Three-Section Clock
--------------------------------

The exam has three sections of 75 questions, with 80 minutes per section and an optional ten-minute break after each. That gives you about 64 seconds per question. Because ordinary breaks are limited to the scheduled opportunities, practice the same section boundaries rather than treating all 225 questions as one flexible block. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

- Start each section by answering questions you can resolve promptly; flag a difficult item rather than spending several minutes on it.
- At question 25 and question 50, check whether you are near 27 and 53 minutes, respectively. Adjust your pace if needed.
- Leave a few minutes to revisit flags within that section. Do not build a plan that depends on returning to an earlier section; confirm navigation rules in the exam instructions.
- During simulations, make an answer choice for every item. AOBOG says the overall score reflects the number answered correctly. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

> **Pro Tip:** Practice on a computer using the permitted on-screen tools. AOA says the remote platform provides lab values, a scratch pad, and a calculator; its platform practice exam is useful for navigation but is not specialty-specific. [\[3\]](#cite-3 "Reference [3]")

Common Pitfalls to Avoid
------------------------

- **Rereading instead of retrieving:** After reviewing an OB-GYN guideline or textbook section, close it and answer related cases without notes.
- **Studying only your daily caseload:** Compare your question log with the complete AOBOG outline, especially oncology, infertility, urogynecology, and OMM/OPP. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")
- **Skipping the technical rehearsal:** AOA advises installing the current secure browser, completing the pre-test check, and using a suitable personal computer; work or hospital computers and Chromebooks cannot install the required browser. Arrange a private room and powered computer and phone. [\[3\]](#cite-3 "Reference [3]")
- **Chasing a raw-score target:** AOBOG reports scaled scores and requires 500 to pass; it does not publish a fixed percentage-correct threshold on its written-exam page. Use practice results to locate gaps, not to calculate a promised passing score. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

Key Takeaways: Act This Week
----------------------------

- Save the current AOBOG content outline and confirm your exam-window details.
- Take one timed mixed set; label every miss by category and decision type.
- Schedule your first 75-question, 80-minute rehearsal.
- Turn five recurring errors into short retrieval prompts.
- Check your remote-testing setup well before exam day. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

You do not need to relearn the entire specialty at once. Start with one measured question set, let its errors guide your next study block, and keep practicing the decisions you will make under the AOBOG clock.

    Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

 ### How long should I allow for each AOBOG written-exam question?

Each 75-question section lasts 80 minutes, or about 64 seconds per question on average. Practice flagging difficult items and returning to them within the section. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

### Which AOBOG written-exam topics deserve the most study time?

Start with obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine, then gynecology, because they have the largest published blueprint ranges. Keep weekly practice for every smaller category. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

### Should I prepare case presentations for the Primary Written Exam?

Prioritize timed multiple-choice decisions for the written exam. Spoken case explanations are more directly relevant to the separate AOBOG Oral Exam. [\[1\]](#cite-1 "Reference [1]")

### Can I take the remotely proctored exam on a hospital computer?

AOA advises using a personal computer with administrator access; work and hospital computers cannot install the required secure browser. Complete the technical check in advance. [\[3\]](#cite-3 "Reference [3]")
