 About the EDAIC Exam
----------------------

The European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EDAIC) is a prestigious, multilingual, two-part examination administered by the ESAIC. It serves as a recognized end-of-training benchmark for specialist anaesthesiologists in Europe and internationally.

### Eligibility

To sit for Part I, candidates must be medical graduates. Part II requires a pass in Part I and is typically taken in the final year of specialist training or after acquiring a national specialist diploma, though specific requirements may vary by country. Candidates should verify exact rules with the ESAIC.

### Exam Format

Part I consists of two written Multiple True/False (MTF) papers (Paper A: Basic Sciences, Paper B: Clinical). Part II comprises four oral viva sessions testing clinical competence and applied basic sciences.

### Duration

Part I takes a full day, split into two 120-minute papers. Part II takes a full day, featuring four 25-minute oral examination sessions.

### Passing Criteria

Part I utilizes a borderline regression standard-setting method with no negative marking. Part II requires candidates to demonstrate specialist-level clinical competence across four viva sessions, needing an overall pass mark without critically failing multiple sections.

### Exam Fees

Fees typically range from €350 to €400 for Part I, and €550 to €600 for Part II, with discounted rates generally available for ESAIC members. Candidates should verify current fees on the official ESAIC website.

### Exam Frequency

Part I is held annually, typically in September or early October. Part II is conducted throughout the year, from February to December, across multiple centers and online.

### Registration Process

Registration is completed entirely online through the ESAIC website. Candidates must create an account, submit proof of medical qualifications and training status, and meet strict registration deadlines.

 EDAIC Exam Structure
----------------------

Our materials cover all parts of the EDAIC examination

### Part I Examination

The EDAIC Part I Examination is a comprehensive written assessment designed to evaluate a candidate's foundational theoretical knowledge required for safe anesthetic practice. It rigorously tests basic sciences relevant to anesthesia, along with clinical anesthesiology, intensive care medicine, resuscitation, and pain management, serving as the required prerequisite for the Part II oral examination.

Two written papers (Paper A and Paper B) comprising Multiple True/False (MTF) questions. Each paper contains 60 questions, and each question has 5 statements to be individually marked as true or false. 4 hours total (Two 2-hour papers, typically held on the same day with a break in between) Pass: Variable. The passing score is determined annually for each paper using recognized standard-setting methods (such as the Hofstee method) to account for exam difficulty.

  Key Topics

Physiology and Biochemistry Pharmacology Physics and Clinical Measurement Clinical Anaesthesiology Intensive Care Medicine and Resuscitation Pain Medicine

### Part II Examination

The EDAIC Part II is a comprehensive oral examination designed to assess a candidate's clinical judgment, problem-solving skills, and ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life clinical scenarios. It evaluates whether the candidate possesses the specialist-level competence in anaesthesiology and intensive care required for independent practice.

Structured Oral Examination (SOE) consisting of four 25-minute viva voce sessions, with candidates encountering a total of eight different examiners. 100 minutes of active examination time (four 25-minute vivas), plus 10 minutes of guided preparation time before each viva, spanning a single full day. Pass: Candidates must achieve a minimum of 25 out of 40 in the morning sessions, 25 out of 40 in the afternoon sessions, and an overall minimum score of 60 out of 80 to pass.

  Key Topics

Applied Basic Sciences (Physiology and Anatomy) Applied Pharmacology Clinical Anaesthesia Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine Clinical Investigations and Imaging

A practical guide to help you plan your EDAIC preparation effectively

### Recommended Timeline

9 to 12 months of structured, comprehensive study.

      ### Study Tips

 - Review the official ESAIC syllabus comprehensively to ensure all topics are covered.
- Practice Multiple True/False (MTF) questions extensively to master the specific Part I format.
- Take the On-Line Assessment (OLA) to benchmark your knowledge before attempting Part I.

- Familiarize yourself with the latest ESAIC guidelines and European resuscitation protocols.

       ### High-Yield Topics

 - Cardiovascular and respiratory physiology
- Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of intravenous and volatile anaesthetic agents
- Physics of anaesthetic machines, breathing circuits, and monitoring equipment
- Obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia emergencies
- Mechanical ventilation modes and ARDS management
- Airway management guidelines and difficult airway algorithms

      ### Common Pitfalls

 - Underestimating the depth required for basic sciences, particularly physics and equipment.
- Leaving MTF questions blank; since there is no negative marking, unanswered questions simply score zero.
- Poor time management during the Part I written papers, leading to rushed answers.
- Struggling to structure answers clearly and confidently during the Part II oral vivas.
- Relying purely on clinical experience rather than studying established European guidelines.

    Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

Everything you need to know about EDAIC preparation

Do I need to be a European citizen to take the EDAIC?

No, the EDAIC is an international benchmark. Medical graduates from around the world are eligible to sit for the exam, provided they meet the medical degree and training requirements.

What is the pass rate for the EDAIC Part I?

The pass rate for Part I varies by year and cohort, but generally ranges between 40% and 55%. Because it is a rigorous end-of-training exam, thorough preparation and early studying are essential.

Are there negative marks in the EDAIC Part I?

No, there is no negative marking in the EDAIC Part I Multiple True/False (MTF) papers. Candidates are strongly encouraged to attempt every question, as unanswered questions score zero.

How long does a pass in Part I remain valid?

Generally, a pass in Part I is valid indefinitely, allowing candidates to take Part II when they meet the training requirements. However, candidates should always check the most current ESAIC regulations as policies may update.

Can I sit for Part II if I have not completed my training?

Part II is intended as an end-of-training assessment. While you can take Part I earlier, Part II typically requires candidates to be in their final year of specialist training or to hold a specialist diploma.

How is the Part II oral examination structured?

Part II consists of four 25-minute viva sessions held in a single day. Two sessions focus on applied basic sciences, and two focus on clinical anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.

How many times can I retake the EDAIC if I fail?

There is currently no strict limit on the number of attempts for Part I or Part II. However, candidates must pay the full examination fee for each new attempt.

Is the EDAIC recognized in the UK for GMC registration?

The EDAIC is highly regarded and is often recognized as equivalent to national exams in several European countries. For the UK, it can support applications for the Specialist Register via the CESR/Portfolio pathway, though specific GMC criteria always apply.
