 About the FRCA Exam
---------------------

The Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) is the principal examination series for doctors training in anaesthetics in the UK. It is divided into two main stages: the Primary FRCA and the Final FRCA. Passing both stages demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the basic sciences, clinical anaesthesia, and intensive care medicine required to progress through the UK anaesthetic training curriculum.

### Eligibility

For the Primary FRCA, candidates typically need to be registered with the GMC, hold a UK training post (or recognized equivalent), and have the approval of their College Tutor. To sit the Final FRCA, candidates must have passed the Primary FRCA (or hold a recognized exemption) and usually be in Stage 2 or 3 of a UK anaesthetics training programme or equivalent.

### Exam Format

The Primary FRCA consists of a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) paper (SBA and MTF), an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), and a Structured Oral Examination (SOE). The Final FRCA comprises a Written examination (Single Best Answer and Constructed Response Questions) and an SOE assessing clinical anaesthesia, intensive care, and applied basic sciences.

### Duration

The Primary MCQ is 3 hours long. The Final Written exam is typically 3 hours. OSCE and SOE components are usually scheduled over a half-day or full-day session at the RCoA or a designated examination center.

### Passing Criteria

Pass marks for written papers are standard-set using the Angoff method and vary by sitting. The OSCE uses borderline regression methodology, while SOEs use a structured, standardized grading matrix. Candidates must pass the written components before progressing to the OSCE/SOE in their respective stages.

### Exam Fees

Examination fees vary annually. Currently, the Primary MCQ is approximately £350-£400, and the Primary OSCE/SOE is around £650-£700. The Final Written is approximately £500, and the Final SOE is around £750-£800. Candidates should verify exact fees on the RCoA website.

### Exam Frequency

The exams are held in multiple 'diets' throughout the year. The Primary MCQ usually has three diets (September, November, February), while the Final exams typically have two main diets (Autumn and Spring).

### Registration Process

Registration is completed online via the RCoA website. Candidates must submit an Initial Registration Form, provide proof of eligibility (such as completion of required training certificates signed by an Educational Supervisor or College Tutor), and pay the examination fee before the application deadline.

    Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

Everything you need to know about FRCA preparation

Who is eligible to take the Primary FRCA?

To be eligible for the Primary FRCA, candidates must hold UK GMC registration or be an overseas graduate in an equivalent recognized training scheme. UK trainees are usually expected to be in Stage 1 of their anaesthetics training program.

Can International Medical Graduates (IMGs) sit the FRCA?

Yes, IMGs can sit the FRCA. However, they must fulfill specific eligibility criteria, which may include holding GMC registration, submitting equivalent overseas training evidence, or applying through a recognized sponsorship scheme. IMGs should review the RCoA examination regulations for specific pathways.

How many attempts are allowed for each exam component?

Candidates are generally permitted a maximum of six attempts at each component of the FRCA. An application for a sixth attempt requires submission of additional documentation and educational supervisor support. Candidates should consult the latest RCoA examination regulations for precise details.

How long is a pass in the Primary FRCA valid?

A pass in the Primary FRCA is typically valid for seven years. Candidates must complete the Final FRCA within this timeframe; otherwise, they may be required to retake the Primary exams or apply for a special extension.

What is the difference between an SAQ and a CRQ in the Final Written?

Constructed Response Questions (CRQs) have replaced Short Answer Questions (SAQs). CRQs are more structured, usually requiring specific, brief answers (such as single words, numbers, or short phrases) rather than free-text essays, making them more objective to mark.

How much does the complete FRCA cost?

The total cost of the FRCA exams is substantial. Passing all components on the first attempt usually exceeds £2,000, excluding travel, accommodation, and preparation materials. Candidates should budget accordingly and check current fees on the college website.

What are the pass rates for the FRCA exams?

Pass rates vary significantly by component and diet. Historically, the Primary MCQ has a pass rate of around 50-60%, while OSCE/SOE pass rates generally range from 45% to 60%. The Final exams follow a similar trend. Current statistics are published annually by the RCoA.

Do I need to pass the written exam before taking the clinical components?

Yes. For both the Primary and Final FRCA, candidates must successfully pass the respective written exam (MCQ or Written Paper) before they are invited to sit the OSCE/SOE or Final SOE components.

How should I prepare for the SOE (viva)?

Preparation for the SOE requires extensive out-loud practice. Candidates should study with peers, arrange mock vivas with consultants, and learn to structure their answers logically and confidently. Simply reading textbooks is generally insufficient for SOE success.
