 About the ABEM Exam
---------------------

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) Certification is the premier credential for Emergency Medicine physicians in the United States. To achieve certification, candidates must successfully complete a two-step process: the Qualifying Examination (QE), a rigorous written test, followed by the Oral Certification Examination. Together, these exams evaluate a physician's medical knowledge, diagnostic reasoning, communication skills, and real-time clinical management.

### Eligibility

Candidates must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited or RCPSC-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program. Additionally, applicants must hold a valid, unrestricted medical license in the United States or Canada, or be a recent graduate in the process of obtaining one.

### Exam Format

The certification pathway consists of two parts. The Qualifying Exam (QE) is a computer-based test with approximately 305 single-best-answer multiple-choice questions (including image-based items). The Oral Exam uses standardized virtual case scenarios to assess real-time decision-making, organization of patient information, and communication.

### Duration

The Qualifying Exam takes approximately 8 hours, divided into two testing sessions with scheduled breaks. The Oral Examination is conducted over a half-day session involving multiple standardized patient cases.

### Passing Criteria

Both exams are graded using a criterion-referenced standard, meaning candidates must meet an absolute passing threshold established by the ABEM rather than competing against peers. Scores are scaled, and results are reported as pass or fail.

### Exam Fees

Initial application and exam fees total approximately $3,175 USD ($985 for the initial credential application, $940 for the Qualifying Exam, and $1,250 for the Oral Exam). Candidates should verify current pricing on the official ABEM website.

### Exam Frequency

The Qualifying Exam is administered once annually during a Fall testing window. The Oral Exam is typically offered twice a year, during Spring and Fall administration windows.

### Registration Process

Candidates must first submit a credential application via the ABEM initial certification portal. Once residency training is verified and the application is approved, candidates can register and schedule their Qualifying Exam through Pearson VUE.

 ABEM Exam Structure
---------------------

Our materials cover all parts of the ABEM examination

### Qualifying Exam

The ABEM Qualifying Exam is a rigorous, computer-based assessment designed to evaluate a physician's core medical knowledge and diagnostic reasoning in emergency medicine. As the first major testing hurdle for board certification, this exam thoroughly evaluates the candidate's grasp of the Emergency Medicine Model, ensuring they meet the foundational clinical standards required to provide high-quality emergency care.

Computer-based multiple-choice examination consisting of approximately 305 single-best-answer questions, which include both text-based clinical scenarios and pictorial items requiring the interpretation of images such as ECGs, X-rays, and ultrasounds. Approximately 8 hours of total appointment time, which includes 6 hours and 20 minutes of actual testing time divided equally into two sections, separated by a 1-hour scheduled break. Pass: The exam is criterion-referenced; candidates must achieve a minimum scaled score of 77 (on a scale of 0 to 100) to pass.

### Oral Exam

The ABEM Oral Certification Examination evaluates an emergency physician's ability to manage complex clinical situations in real time. Using standardized patient scenarios based on actual cases, this exam assesses critical skills such as data gathering, problem-solving, patient management, and communication, which cannot be adequately measured by written multiple-choice tests.

Simulated clinical encounters consisting of single-patient and multiple-patient oral scenarios Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours (half-day session) Pass: Pass/Fail based on a criterion-referenced standard set by ABEM

  Key Topics

How to Prepare for the ABEM
-----------------------------

A practical guide to help you plan your ABEM preparation effectively

### Recommended Timeline

6-12 months of structured study. Candidates typically begin intensive written board preparation in their final year of residency, followed by 2-3 months of dedicated mock oral practice before the Oral Exam.

      ### Study Tips

 - Utilize high-quality, EM-specific question banks daily to build stamina for the 305-question Qualifying Exam.
- Review high-yield clinical images regularly, especially ECGs, point-of-care ultrasounds, and emergency radiology (CT/X-ray).
- Form a study group specifically for the Oral Exam to practice verbalizing clinical reasoning and management out loud.
- Familiarize yourself with the ABEM EM Model of Clinical Practice to ensure all tested subtopics are covered.
- Take full-length mock exams to practice time management, as the Qualifying Exam requires a steady pace to complete both sections.
- For the Oral Exam, develop a structured, repeatable framework for approaching every case (e.g., primary survey, vital signs, secondary survey, interventions, disposition).

       ### High-Yield Topics

 - ECG interpretation and management of complex arrhythmias/ACS
- Toxidromes, ingestions, and specific antidote therapies
- Advanced airway management and ventilator troubleshooting
- Pediatric resuscitation dosages and algorithms
- Trauma primary and secondary surveys (ATLS protocols)
- Sepsis recognition and goal-directed therapy
- Interpretation of emergency point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)

      ### Common Pitfalls

 - Underestimating the volume of image-based questions on the Qualifying Exam.
- Struggling with time management and spending too long on difficult MCQs.
- For the Oral Exam, 'thinking silently' instead of verbalizing every diagnostic and treatment step for the examiner.
- Failing to ask for and act upon abnormal vital signs during mock oral scenarios.
- Studying generic medical material rather than focusing on emergency medicine-specific presentations and dispositions.

     Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

Everything you need to know about ABEM preparation

 ### What is the pass rate for the ABEM Qualifying Exam?

Historically, the pass rate for first-time takers of the ABEM Qualifying Examination is robust, typically ranging between 88% and 92%. However, success requires diligent preparation, completion of an accredited residency, and strong clinical foundational knowledge.

### Can I take the ABEM Oral Exam before the Qualifying Exam?

No. The certification pathway is strictly sequential. Candidates must successfully pass the Qualifying Exam before they become eligible to register for and take the Oral Certification Examination.

### Do I need to travel for the ABEM Oral Examination?

In recent years, the ABEM has transitioned the Oral Examination to a fully virtual format. This allows candidates to take the exam from a quiet, private location with a stable internet connection, eliminating the need to travel to a testing center.

### How long is my ABEM Board Eligibility valid?

Physicians generally have a period of up to 7 years from the date of their residency graduation to achieve initial ABEM certification. If Board Eligibility expires, candidates must complete a formal re-entry process. Candidates should verify their specific timeline with the ABEM.

### Is the ABEM Qualifying Exam an open-book test?

No, the Qualifying Exam is a strict, closed-book, proctored examination administered at Pearson VUE testing centers. No outside reference materials, calculators, or devices are permitted.

### How many times can I retake the ABEM exams if I fail?

Candidates can retake the Qualifying Exam or Oral Exam during standard administration windows as long as their Board Eligibility period (typically 7 years) remains active. There are no limits on the number of attempts within this valid eligibility window, though each attempt requires repayment of exam fees.

### What is the format of the ABEM Oral Exam cases?

The Oral Exam uses standardized virtual case scenarios. Candidates act as the primary emergency physician, verbally requesting history, physical exam findings, and diagnostic tests, while simultaneously ordering treatments and determining final patient disposition in real time.

### How do I maintain my ABEM certification once I pass?

ABEM certification is maintained through a continuous continuing certification process. Rather than taking a traditional 10-year high-stakes recertification exam, diplomates now primarily participate in 'MyEMCert', which involves open-book, topic-specific online modules taken periodically.
