American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology

American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology

       USA

ABOG is the U.S. certifying board for Obstetrics and Gynecology, offering a voluntary specialty certification pathway. Initial specialty certification is structured as a two-step process: the Specialty Qualifying Examination (QE) followed by the Specialty Certifying Examination (CE). Completing both steps leads to ABOG specialty certification in OB-GYN.

 About the ABOG Exam
---------------------

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) certification is the premier specialty certification for obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States. It involves a rigorous two-step process: a computer-based Qualifying Examination (QE) assessing clinical knowledge, followed by an oral Certifying Examination (CE) evaluating clinical judgment and practice. Achieving ABOG certification demonstrates a physician's dedication to high standards of patient care and expertise in women's health.

### Eligibility

Candidates must have an MD or DO degree, hold an active and unrestricted medical license, and have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Candidates must also complete specific surgical and clinical case logs during their training.

### Exam Format

Step 1 (Qualifying Exam) is a computer-based, single-best-answer multiple-choice examination. Step 2 (Certifying Exam) is a three-hour oral examination where candidates are questioned on their submitted clinical case list as well as structured, simulated cases.

### Duration

The Qualifying Exam takes approximately one full day (around 8 hours including breaks). The Certifying Exam takes exactly three hours (one hour each for Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Office Practice).

### Passing Criteria

The Qualifying Exam is scored using a criterion-referenced pass/fail standard. For the Certifying Exam, each of the three sections is graded independently by pairs of examiners evaluating medical knowledge, clinical judgment, and patient care. Candidates must pass both overall steps to become certified.

### Exam Fees

Exam fees vary annually. Generally, the Qualifying Exam costs approximately $1,100 to $1,500, and the Certifying Exam costs approximately $1,200 to $1,600. Candidates should verify the exact current fees on the official ABOG website.

### Exam Frequency

The Qualifying Exam is typically offered once a year in the summer. The Certifying Exam is offered over several weeks during the late fall and winter months.

### Registration Process

Candidates must apply online through the ABOG candidate portal. The process involves submitting an application, paying the examination fees, and providing proof of residency completion and medical licensure. Certifying Exam candidates must also compile and submit a comprehensive clinical case list from their early practice.

- For the Certifying Exam, meticulously compile and review your case list throughout your first year of practice to ensure accuracy and readiness.
- Conduct multiple mock oral exams with senior colleagues or mentors to practice articulating clinical reasoning under pressure.
- Identify and focus on your weakest third of the syllabus, as passing requires solid knowledge across Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Office Practice.

       ### High-Yield Topics

 - Obstetric hemorrhage protocols and management
- Abnormal uterine bleeding (PALM-COEIN) pathways
- Current ASCCP cervical cancer screening and management guidelines
- Intrapartum fetal heart rate monitoring interpretation (Category I, II, III)

- Poor time management during the prolonged, computer-based Qualifying Exam.
- Being argumentative or overly defensive with examiners during the oral Certifying Exam.
- Relying on outdated guidelines instead of the most recently published ACOG documentation.

    Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

Everything you need to know about ABOG preparation

What is the difference between the ABOG Qualifying Exam and the Certifying Exam?

The Qualifying Exam (QE) is the first step and consists of a computer-based, multiple-choice test assessing foundational clinical knowledge. The Certifying Exam (CE) is the second step, taking the form of a three-hour oral exam that evaluates clinical judgment, patient care, and communication based on the candidate's actual case list and simulated scenarios.

Who is eligible to take the ABOG Qualifying Exam?

Eligibility generally requires graduation from an ACGME-accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program, an active and unrestricted medical license, and completion of required residency case logs. Candidates should review specific graduation year requirements on the ABOG website.

How long is the case list collection period for the Certifying Exam?

The case list collection typically encompasses 12 months of early post-residency clinical practice. However, there are specific variations for candidates entering fellowships immediately after residency. Candidates must consult the ABOG bulletin for their exact requirements.

Where can I take the ABOG Qualifying Exam?

The Qualifying Exam is administered at designated Pearson VUE testing centers. These centers are located extensively throughout the United States and globally, providing computer-based testing environments.

How is the Certifying Exam structured?

The oral Certifying Exam is three hours long in total. It is divided equally into one hour of Obstetrics, one hour of Gynecology, and one hour of Office Practice. Candidates are questioned by a pair of examiners in each of the three sections.

What happens if I fail the ABOG Qualifying Exam?

If a candidate fails the Qualifying Exam, they may reapply to take it in a subsequent year. However, ABOG enforces limits on the maximum number of attempts and the total time allowed to achieve certification after completing residency.

Are mock oral exams necessary for the Certifying Exam?

While not formally required, mock oral exams are highly recommended. Practicing with senior colleagues helps candidates learn how to concisely present cases, defend clinical decisions, and manage the intense pacing of a three-hour oral examination.

How long does ABOG Initial Certification last?

Once initial certification is achieved, diplomates must participate in the ABOG Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process. This is an ongoing, annual process involving reading assignments and assessments to maintain active board-certified status.

What is the pass rate for the ABOG exams?

Historically, the pass rates for both the Qualifying and Certifying exams are quite high for first-time takers, often exceeding 80%. However, pass rates fluctuate yearly, and candidates should consult the official ABOG statistical reports for the most current data.

How should I study for the Office Practice section?

Candidates should dedicate equal study time to Office Practice as they do to OB and GYN. Focus heavily on ACOG Practice Bulletins, preventative care guidelines, adult immunizations, and basic reproductive endocrinology.
