About the DNB Exam
--------------------

The Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Obstetrics & Gynecology is a prestigious postgraduate medical qualification awarded by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) in India. It serves as a national exit assessment certifying that candidates have achieved specialist-level clinical competence. Successful completion of both the theory and practical examinations grants the candidate a qualification equivalent to an MD/MS degree.

### Eligibility

Candidates must have successfully completed 3 years of NBEMS-accredited DNB training in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Alternatively, candidates holding a recognized MD/MS degree in Obstetrics & Gynecology from an Indian university can appear directly for the DNB Final Examinations. A valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or State Medical Council (SMC) is mandatory.

### Exam Format

The assessment is divided into two sequential parts. The Final Theory Examination consists of four written papers of 100 marks each, primarily featuring short answer questions. Candidates who pass the theory stage proceed to the Final Practical Examination, which includes clinical case presentations, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), and viva voce covering instruments, specimens, and CTGs.

### Duration

The Theory Examination consists of four papers, each lasting 3 hours, conducted over multiple days. The Practical Examination is typically conducted over 1 to 2 days per candidate at a designated clinical center.

### Passing Criteria

Candidates must secure an aggregate of at least 50% across the four theory papers to pass the Theory Examination and become eligible for the Practical Examination. In the Practical Examination, candidates must also secure a minimum of 50% marks to successfully qualify for the DNB award.

### Exam Fees

The examination fee for the DNB Final Theory exam is generally around INR 6,000 to INR 7,000, with a separate fee required for the Practical Examination. Candidates should verify the exact current fees via the official NBEMS information bulletin.

### Exam Frequency

The DNB Final Examinations are held twice a year, typically in a Summer session (June/July) and a Winter session (December/January).

### Registration Process

Registration is conducted entirely online through the official NBEMS portal (natboard.edu.in). Candidates must complete the application form, upload their training completion certificates, and pay the examination fee before the specified deadline.

    Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

Everything you need to know about DNB preparation

What is the difference between DNB and MD/MS in Obstetrics & Gynecology?

The DNB is awarded by the NBEMS and is generally pursued in accredited private or corporate hospitals, whereas MD/MS degrees are awarded by universities and typically pursued in medical colleges. Both qualifications are legally equivalent in India for clinical practice and teaching.

How many papers are included in the DNB Final Theory exam?

The theory exam consists of four written papers. Each paper carries 100 marks and must be completed within 3 hours. The papers systematically cover basic sciences, obstetrics, gynecology, and recent advances.

What is the passing criteria for the DNB Theory examination?

Candidates must secure an aggregate of at least 50% across the four theory papers to pass. Achieving this minimum score is a mandatory prerequisite to be eligible for the subsequent practical examination.

Can I attempt the DNB practical exam if I fail the theory exam?

No. NBEMS rules state that qualifying the theory examination is absolutely mandatory before a candidate can appear for the practical examination. If you fail the theory component, you must retake it.

Is there any negative marking in the DNB Final Theory Exam?

No, there is no negative marking. The DNB Final Theory Exam is a subjective, written examination requiring short essay-type answers rather than a multiple-choice question (MCQ) format.

How many times can I attempt the DNB practical exam?

Candidates who pass the theory exam are generally allowed up to three or four consecutive attempts at the practical examination. If a candidate fails all these attempts, they typically must retake the theory exam. Candidates should verify current attempt limits in the latest NBEMS bulletin.

Are international guidelines important for the DNB OBGYN exam?

Yes, international evidence-based medicine is highly relevant. Examiners frequently test candidates on RCOG Green-top Guidelines, WHO recommendations, and FIGO staging, especially in Paper IV (Recent Advances) and the practical viva.

How long does it take to get the DNB OBGYN results?

Results for the theory examinations are typically declared within 6 to 8 weeks after the test dates. Practical exam results generally follow within 4 to 6 weeks after the completion of all clinical assessments.
