 About the MRCOG Exam
----------------------

The Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) is an internationally recognized, three-part specialty training examination. Awarded by the RCOG in the UK, it is a gold standard qualification designed to assess candidates' knowledge, clinical skills, and professional attitudes in obstetrics and gynaecology. Successful completion of Parts 1, 2, and 3 is mandatory for doctors seeking to complete their specialty training in the UK and serves as a mark of excellence globally.

### Eligibility

To sit Part 1, candidates must hold a recognized medical degree. For Part 2, candidates must have passed Part 1. For Part 3, candidates must have passed Part 2 and have their Assessment of Training (AoT) approved, which requires demonstrating specific clinical experience in obstetrics and gynaecology. Candidates should verify specific global eligibility criteria with the RCOG.

### Exam Format

Part 1 and Part 2 are computer-based tests consisting of Single Best Answer (SBA) questions and Extended Matching Questions (EMQs) focused on basic science and applied clinical reasoning, respectively. Part 3 is a clinical assessment consisting of a 14-task OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) circuit assessing domains like patient safety, communication, and applied clinical knowledge.

### Duration

Part 1 involves two papers, each lasting 2.5 hours. Part 2 involves two papers, each lasting 3 hours. The Part 3 clinical assessment takes approximately 3 hours to complete the entire 14-station circuit.

### Passing Criteria

The pass mark is not fixed and is determined for each exam diet using rigorous standard-setting methodologies, such as the modified Angoff method for Parts 1 and 2, and the Borderline Regression method for Part 3. Results are reported as standard-set pass/fail marks.

### Exam Fees

Exam fees vary depending on the candidate's country of residence (using a tiered banding system) and the exam part. Part 1 and 2 typically cost between £450 and £650 each. Part 3 is more expensive, generally ranging from £900 to £1,300. Candidates must also pay a one-off fee for the Assessment of Training prior to Part 3.

### Exam Frequency

All three parts of the MRCOG examination are typically held twice a year, providing bi-annual opportunities for candidates to progress through the assessment stages.

### Registration Process

Registration is conducted entirely online via the RCOG website. Candidates must first register for an RCOG account and, for later stages, submit an Assessment of Training application. Once eligible, candidates can book their computer-based exams through Pearson VUE and their clinical exams directly with the College.

 MRCOG Exam Structure
----------------------

Our materials cover all parts of the MRCOG examination

### MRCOG Part 1

The MRCOG Part 1 is a comprehensive computer-based examination that assesses a candidate's fundamental knowledge of the basic and clinical sciences essential for practicing Obstetrics and Gynaecology. It ensures that early-stage specialty trainees possess a robust scientific foundation in subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and pathology before advancing to more complex clinical assessments.

Computer-based test comprising two papers, each containing 100 Single Best Answer (SBA) questions. 5 hours of total testing time, divided into two 2.5-hour papers taken on the same day. Pass: The pass mark is determined using the modified Angoff standard-setting method, meaning the exact required score fluctuates per exam diet based on paper difficulty.

  Key Topics

Physiology Anatomy Pathology Endocrinology Pharmacology Embryology and Genetics +2 more

### MRCOG Part 2

MRCOG Part 2 is a computer-based examination that evaluates a candidate's ability to apply clinical knowledge to real-world obstetric and gynaecological scenarios. Building upon the foundational sciences tested in Part 1, it assesses diagnostic reasoning, patient management, and decision-making skills. Passing this stage is a crucial milestone for doctors progressing toward full RCOG membership and specialized clinical practice.

Computer-based test consisting of two written papers. Each paper contains 50 Single Best Answer (SBA) questions and 50 Extended Matching Questions (EMQs). 6 hours total (divided into two papers, each lasting 3 hours, separated by an approximate 1-hour break). Pass: The pass mark is not fixed and is determined for each sitting using the Angoff method, typically falling between 50-60%. Outcomes are based on the combined score of both papers, with SBAs contributing 40% and EMQs contributing 60% to the final grade.

  Key Topics

Antenatal Care and Maternal Medicine Labour and Delivery Postpartum Problems Gynaecological Oncology Urogynaecology and Pelvic Floor Subfertility and Reproductive Endocrinology +3 more

### MRCOG Part 3

The MRCOG Part 3 is the final clinical assessment required to attain membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. It evaluates a candidate's applied clinical knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies through simulated clinical scenarios. The exam strictly assesses core domains such as patient safety, information gathering, and effective communication with both patients and multidisciplinary colleagues.

Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) comprising a circuit of 14 clinical tasks involving simulated patients, lay examiners, and clinical examiners. Approximately 3 hours total, consisting of 14 tasks that each last 12 minutes (including 2 minutes of initial reading time per task). Pass: The pass mark varies for each exam diet and is standard-set using the Borderline Regression Method based on candidate performance across the circuit.

     Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

Everything you need to know about MRCOG preparation

 ### What is the pass mark for the MRCOG exams?

There is no fixed percentage to pass. The RCOG uses standard-setting methods, such as the Angoff method for Parts 1 and 2, and the Borderline Regression method for Part 3, to establish the pass mark for each individual exam diet based on candidate performance and question difficulty.

### Can I skip MRCOG Part 1 if I have another postgraduate qualification?

Generally, exemptions are not granted, and all candidates must start from Part 1. However, candidates are advised to check the RCOG website for any specific reciprocal agreements or extremely rare exemption criteria.

### Do I need to be working in the UK to take the MRCOG?

No, you do not need to work in the UK. The MRCOG is an international exam. Parts 1 and 2 can be taken at Pearson VUE test centers worldwide, and Part 3 is offered in the UK as well as at several international hubs.

### How many times can I attempt the MRCOG exams?

Currently, candidates are allowed a maximum of six attempts at the MRCOG Part 3 clinical assessment. You should verify specific attempt limits for Parts 1 and 2 with the RCOG, as policies may be updated to support candidate progression.

### What is the difference between MRCOG Part 2 and Part 3?

Part 2 is a written, computer-based test that assesses your application of clinical knowledge to complex scenarios. Part 3 is an OSCE-style clinical assessment that evaluates your practical skills, clinical reasoning, communication, and patient safety in simulated real-time encounters.

### How long does it take to complete the entire MRCOG qualification?

Most candidates complete the MRCOG over a period of 3 to 5 years, running parallel to their specialty training. The timeline heavily depends on individual clinical experience, preparation time, and success rates at each stage.

### Are local hospital guidelines sufficient for exam preparation?

No. Exam questions are strictly based on UK national guidelines, specifically the RCOG Green-top Guidelines and NICE guidelines. Relying on local trust protocols can lead to incorrect answers, especially in Parts 2 and 3.

### When should I take MRCOG Part 1?

It is highly recommended to take Part 1 during your early years of specialty training (e.g., ST1 or ST2 in the UK) or shortly after completing foundational medical training, while basic medical sciences are still relatively fresh in your mind.

### How does the Assessment of Training (AoT) work for Part 3?

Before you can book Part 3, your clinical experience must be formally evaluated by the RCOG. The AoT process checks that you have the equivalent of a UK ST3 level of training in obstetrics and gynaecology, ensuring you are clinically prepared for the assessment.

### Is StratOG necessary for passing the exams?

While not absolutely mandatory, StratOG is highly recommended. As the RCOG's official e-learning platform, it maps directly to the syllabus and provides interactive tutorials and practice questions that closely mimic the actual exam format.
