About the CPSP Exam
---------------------

The FCPS Psychiatry exam, administered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), is the premier postgraduate medical qualification for psychiatrists in Pakistan. The pathway includes Part I, an Intermediate Module (IMM), and the final Part II fellowship exit examination.

### Eligibility

Candidates must hold an MBBS degree with valid PMDC registration and have completed a one-year house job to sit for Part I. For IMM and Part II, candidates must complete two and four years of structured, CPSP-accredited psychiatry training respectively, under an approved supervisor.

### Exam Format

Part I and IMM primarily utilize Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) focusing on basic sciences and clinical foundations. Part II includes written papers (MCQs and Short Answer Questions) followed by comprehensive clinical exams featuring TOACS, OSCEs, and long/short case assessments.

### Duration

Written exam papers typically last 3 hours each. The Part II clinical examinations are comprehensive and usually conducted over 1 to 2 days at designated exam centers.

### Passing Criteria

CPSP employs standardized marking methods. Candidates generally must achieve an absolute or relative passing score (often around 60-70%) on the written papers to qualify for clinicals, and must independently pass both written and clinical components for Part II.

### Exam Fees

Exam fees generally range from PKR 15,000 to PKR 30,000 for Part I and IMM, while Part II fees can range from PKR 25,000 to over PKR 50,000. Candidates should verify the exact current fee structure on the official CPSP portal.

### Exam Frequency

Examinations are typically held twice a year, generally occurring in the spring (February/March) and autumn (August/September).

### Registration Process

Registration is conducted online through the CPSP e-portal. Candidates must upload verified educational documents, PMDC certificates, approved supervisor certificates, training e-logbooks, and proof of fee payment.

CPSP Exam Structure
---------------------

Our materials cover all parts of the CPSP examination

### FCPS Part I

The FCPS Part I in Psychiatry is the initial basic sciences examination by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) for candidates pursuing a psychiatric specialization. It evaluates foundational knowledge in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, psychopharmacology, and general medical sciences to ensure readiness for FCPS Part II psychiatric training.

Computer-based examination comprising two papers (Paper I for general basic sciences and Paper II tailored for Psychiatry/Medicine & Allied), each containing 100 Multiple Choice Questions (Single Best Answer). Two papers, each lasting 2 to 2.5 hours, totaling 4 to 5 hours of examination time for the FCPS Part I Psychiatry test. Pass: A passing mark of approximately 75% is required across the psychiatry and general basic science papers, with no negative marking for incorrect answers.

  Key Topics

Neuroanatomy and Head & Neck Anatomy Neurophysiology and General Physiology Psychopharmacology and General Pharmacology Behavioral Sciences and Biostatistics General Pathology and Microbiology Biochemistry and Neurogenetics

### Intermediate Module (IMM)

The Intermediate Module (IMM) in Psychiatry is a mandatory mid-training assessment conducted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) after a candidate completes two years of core residency. It evaluates a trainee's foundational theoretical knowledge, grasp of behavioral sciences, and fundamental clinical skills before they are allowed to advance to the final FCPS Part II training in Psychiatry.

The examination consists of a written theory component divided into two papers (comprising Multiple Choice Questions and/or Short Essay Questions), followed by a practical clinical examination utilizing TOACS (Task-Oriented Assessment of Clinical Skills) stations. The written theory exam consists of two papers, each lasting between 2 to 3 hours depending on the specific paper format (MCQ vs. SAQ). The subsequent clinical TOACS exam duration depends on the number of timed interactive stations. Pass: Candidates must first achieve a minimum qualifying pass mark in the written theory examination to become eligible for the clinical TOACS. Successfully passing both the theory and clinical components is strictly required to clear the IMM.

  Key Topics

General Adult Psychiatry Psychopharmacology Behavioral Sciences and Psychology Neurology and Neuropsychiatry Clinical Assessment and Risk Management

### FCPS Part II (Psychiatry)

FCPS Part II (Psychiatry) is the final, exit-level fellowship examination conducted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, certifying a doctor's competence to practice independently as a consultant psychiatrist. It comprehensively evaluates advanced clinical knowledge, psychopathology, diagnostic reasoning, and evidence-based management across various psychiatric subspecialties.

Written Examination (Two papers consisting of Best Choice Questions) and Clinical/Oral Examination (TOACS, Long Case, and Short Cases/Vivas). Written component consists of two 3-hour papers; Clinical component is typically conducted over 2 to 3 days. Pass: Candidates must pass the written examination (typically 75% aggregate) to advance to the clinical component, where each section (Long Case, Short Cases, TOACS) must be passed independently to achieve an overall 'Pass' status.

    Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

Everything you need to know about CPSP preparation

What is the primary difference between FCPS Part I, IMM, and Part II?

Part I is a basic sciences entry exam. IMM (Intermediate Module) tests mid-training clinical knowledge after two years. Part II is the final exit fellowship exam determining specialist competence in psychiatry.

Are foreign medical graduates eligible for FCPS Psychiatry?

Yes, candidates with equivalent foreign medical degrees recognized by the PMDC can appear for the exam, provided they meet all house job and training prerequisites.

How many attempts are allowed for the FCPS examinations?

CPSP generally allows multiple attempts for Part I, though specific limits or re-registration requirements may apply after continuous failures. Check the official CPSP rulebook for the exact attempt policy.

Is it mandatory to pass the IMM before taking Part II?

Yes, for the Psychiatry specialty, successfully completing the Intermediate Module (IMM) is a mandatory prerequisite before a candidate can be eligible for the final FCPS Part II exit exam.

How heavily is psychopharmacology tested in the FCPS exams?

Psychopharmacology is extremely high-yield in both IMM and Part II, covering mechanisms of action, side effects, drug interactions, and evidence-based prescribing patterns.

Can I take the CPSP examinations outside of Pakistan?

CPSP does offer examination centers in several international locations, particularly in the Middle East and Nepal, though exact availability depends on the exam part and current session. Candidates should check the CPSP portal for international center options.

What is the TOACS format in the clinical examination?

TOACS (Task-Oriented Assessment of Clinical Skills) involves rotating through various stations that assess history taking, physical or mental state examinations, counseling, and data interpretation under strict time limits.

How long does the entire FCPS Psychiatry training take?

The complete fellowship training usually spans four years post-house job. This includes passing Part I, completing two years of structured training for IMM, and two additional years before taking Part II.

What happens if I pass the written Part II exam but fail the clinicals?

Typically, candidates who pass the written exam but fail the clinical component are allowed to retake just the clinical exam in subsequent sessions without re-taking the written part, subject to a specific validity period for the written score.

How should I structure my preparation for the clinical component?

Preparation should focus on hands-on practice. Regularly perform full mental state examinations, present complex cases to your supervisors, and conduct mock TOACS stations with your colleagues to build clinical fluency.
